The New Mexico Burrowing Owl Working Group (NMBOWG)
NMBOWG was formed in 2001 by non-profit organizations, government agencies, private and enterprises, and individuals in response to burrowing owl population declines in New Mexico. Currently, at least four on-going research projects study different aspects of the Burrowing Owl in our state. These studies are located at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, Holloman Air Force Base, in Alamogordo, New Mexico State University and surrounding areas in Las Cruces, and on Turner Ranch Properties. Three of the studies have documented a steady decline in their populations of Burrowing Owls while one study, on the Ladder and Armendaris Ranches, has documented an increase, most likely in response to an active Black-tailed Prairie Dog reintroduction program Besides these study areas, little is known about other populations of Burrowing Owl throughout the state. One of the main focuses of the NMBOWG is to improve this void in knowledge. This can easily be achieved by the help of the general public. One of the goals of the working group is to collect data via a volunteer monitoring system, which assists in locating owls across the state. We welcome your participation in this volunteer monitoring project. Volunteers can help by documenting Burrowing Owl sightings and recording data, by attending meetings of the group, and by promoting the monitoring effort in your local community. This cooperative effort will provide government agencies, private landowners, and other interested individuals with current data on the Burrowing Owl, which will facilitate future conservation management plans for this species.
