Coyote The coyote is smaller than a wolf but larger than a fox and lives in many places throughout the United States. Coyotes are opportunistic and are able to live in close proximity to humans. This ability has allowed coyote populations to increase when many animal populations are decreasing. Even though we do not have tall-grass prairies in New Mexico, we do have a large population of coyotes. The coyote eats small-to medium-sized mammals, but packs will occasionally work together to capture a larger animal. Coyotes also scavenge from dead carcasses and trash containers.
