Ferruginous Hawk

The Ferruginous Hawk is a large, rufous and white hawk that inhabits open areas such as prairies and deserts.  Ferruginous Hawks build large nests on cliffs, solitary trees, utility structures, and occasionally on the ground.  These hawks feed primarily on rabbits, ground squirrels, and prairie dogs.  They will sit-and-wait at prairie dog towns, watching for an unsuspecting prairie dog to pop up.  They are an important predator in the prairie ecosystem.
