Hognose Snake Like the bullsnake, hognose snakes are vital to keep small mammal populations at a reasonable level. They are also non-venomous, and kill their prey by constriction. They dig with their blunt, shovel like nose, looking and smelling for prey hidden beneath the ground. When threatened, the Hognose Snake turns upside-down, vomits up its last meal, and plays dead.
