Long-billed Curlew

The long, curved beak on the curlew is ideal for catching insects hidden in the grass of the short-grass prairie ecosystems.  Long-billed Curlews are a social bird, and often forage, roost and migrate in large flocks.  They build their nests on the ground.  The color and pattern variations of the bird and the eggs make them almost indistinguishable from the grass providing them with protection from potential predators.
